Viscount Rothermere , of Hemsted in the County of Kent , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created on May 17, 1919 for the newspaper magnate Harold Harmsworth, 1st Baron Rothermere . The latter had put his widely read tabloids entirely at the service of Allied war propaganda. He had also been temporarily Chairman of the Air Force Council ( President of the Air Council ) in the Lloyd George administration .

Subordinate title

The first Viscount had already been awarded the title Baronet , of Horsey in the County of Norfolk on July 14, 1910 . On January 17, 1914, he was also raised to Baron Rothermere , of Hemsted in the County of Kent. The titles belong to the Baronetage or Peerage of the United Kingdom and are listed as subordinate titles by the respective Viscount.

Other titles from relatives

Of the four brothers of the first Viscount, the eldest ( Alfred Harmsworth ) was also made Viscount as Viscount Northcliffe , while a younger ( Cecil Harmsworth ) was raised to Baron Harmsworth . The other two brothers received baronet degrees .

However, there is no right of inheritance among each other.
