The Visuddhi-Magga ( "Path of Purity") is a major Buddhist works from the 5th century AD The treatise by the scholar monk.. Buddhaghosa considered the first comprehensive and systematic presentation of the Theravada - Buddhism . It is written in Pali , the written language of Theravada.

The Visuddhi Magga is divided into three major sections:

  1. Sila ( virtue ) - a representation of Buddhist ethics
  2. Samādhi ( collection ) - descriptions of more than 40 meditation objects
  3. Pañña (p.) Or Prajña (skt.) ( Wisdom ) - an exegesis of the Abhidhamma Pitaka

In particular, the second and third parts of the book gained importance beyond monastic circles in the second half of the 20th century , as some innovators of Buddhist meditation practice (such as Mahasi Sayadaw in Myanmar ) relied on the instructions in the Visuddhimagga and thus a direct connection between oldest tradition and modern meditation training .

The Visuddhimagga is based on the Vimuttimagga ("way to redemption") of Upatissa Thera .
