Vittorio Ellena (born May 11, 1844 in Saluzzo , † July 19, 1892 in Rome ) was an Italian statesman .

Life

Vittorio Ellena joined the Ministry of Agriculture as a civil servant, soon rose to the position of Head of Section due to his excellent administrative talent, became the General Director of Customs in the Ministry of Finance in 1881 and played a major role in many Italian trade agreements as well as in the determination of the customs tariff. In 1886 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Rome , where he sat with the right-wing parties. From April 1887 to the end of 1888 he was Secretary General in the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Trade. On May 15, 1892, he became finance minister in the cabinet of Giovanni Giolitti , but resigned from this office due to illness on July 7, 1892 and died shortly afterwards at the age of only 48 in Rome. Bernardino Grimaldi (July 7, 1892 to May 24, 1893) and Lazzaro Gagliardo (May 24, 1893 to December 15, 1893) took over his office in quick succession .
