The bridge in 2006

Vivekananda Setu ( Bengali : বিবেকানন্দ সেতু , Bibekānanda setu ; German: Vivekananda Bridge ; in English also Willingdon Bridge or Bally Bridge ) is a bridge over the Hugli River in the Indian state of West Bengal . It was completed in 1932 and connects Haora near Bali (Bally) with Kolkata near Dakshineshwar .

The bridge, named after Vivekananda , is a combined rail-road bridge. It consists of seven steel segments. A railway line between Kolkata (Sealdah Station) and Delhi as well as the road connection of the Grand Trunk Road (National Highway 2) run over it. Because of its dilapidation and insufficient permeability, a new road bridge called Nivedita Setu was built just 50 meters south of it as part of the National Highways Development Project . It is the first extradosed bridge in India.

The Dakshineshwar temple complex is right next to the bridge .
