The genus Vochysia belongs to the Vochysiaceae family . The botanical name genus Vochysia is derived from a Caribbean language. This purely neotropical genus is distributed with around 100–130 species in tropical Central and South America , from 23 ° N to 27 ° S.

Most of the Vochysia species are trees , some are shrubs , and a few are semi-shrubs . The undivided, entire leaves are opposite or whorled . The stipules are small and triangular. The inflorescences are thyrsen with coiled partial inflorescences , which are mostly terminal at the branch ends.

All Vochysia species are not subject to CITES rules and trade restrictions. The predominantly fibrous trunks are used in their areas of distribution for the construction of canoes and dugouts , but are also used in the construction of furniture and as construction timber.
