The bird park Schotten is located in Schotten in the Vogelsbergkreis and offers a wide range of exotic and native animals.

Story and concept

In 1978 a small bird park was created about two kilometers east of Schotten on the banks of the Nidda . From this a small zoo developed with birds, mammals and reptiles from all over the world.

The area was previously used by the Karl Weitz cloth factory. In 1971, an operator of residential homes for the elderly and the disabled bought the facility and the neighboring fire pond in order to use it as a park for a residential home. Since earlier workshops had no function in this concept, a free-flight hall for birds was later set up there: the core of the bird park. At the beginning of the 1980s, Schottener Sozialedienste gGmbH took over the facility.

The bird park is a recognized workshop for disabled people (WfbM). The 31 employees with disabilities look after the animals.

In 2018 over 90,000 visitors were counted.

The bird park

The largest building in the park is the tropical house with free flight hall, in which reptiles, monkeys and exotic birds live. Next to it is the monkey house with squirrel monkeys and red-hand tamarins .

The outdoor enclosure shows birds from all over the world in aviaries and in open spaces, including rheas . In addition, llamas and old domestic animal breeds are kept there, including the red and white Husum pig , which Danish farmers in North Friesland bred as a striped “protest pig ” and ran in the front yard when they were no longer allowed to hoist the red and white flag of Denmark around 1900 . Bennett kangaroos and emus are kept on the Australian enclosure .

Beyond the Nidda is the Senses Park, a large open space with a children's playground and barbecue facilities. There is also a petting enclosure for children with goats and sheep .

The Vogelpark café-restaurant is also operated by employees with disabilities and offers space for 120 visitors. A historic railway carriage is set up in the entrance area.
