Profession and historical research

The old high school of Chios in Chios town

Zolotas was a teacher and since 1885 director of the high school in Chios. He became famous for his five-volume “History of Chios” in Greek, which was published posthumously by his daughter Aimilia K. Sarou. She also published a biography of Nikephoros of Chios in Greek in 1907 and a book on the fortress of Chios in 1916.

Zolotas' "History of Chios" comprises three volumes, the first and third volumes being divided into two volumes:

  • Volume I Part 1 deals with the historical topography of the island. The author examines the name "Chios" and the mythical history of the island. It describes the ancient history of Chios, treats ancient texts, the inscriptions , gods, ancient and medieval toponomics . It ends with a treatise on the modern provinces ( nomoi ) of Greece.
  • Volume I Part 2 is devoted to the historical topography of the city of Chios and the genealogy of important families. This second part also contains an onomastic catalog of Chios, with reference to the family names contained in the historical manuscripts.
  • Volume II deals with the epochs of Hellenism , Roman rule and Genoese rule ( Genoatokratia ). With this volume begins the chronological presentation, which dates from the 4th century BC. Until 1566 is shown.
  • Volume III Part 1 is devoted to the rule of the Turks (Turkokratia) from 1566 to 1912. Among other things, the most important historical events such as the expedition of the Florentines in Chios in 1599, the Turkish-Venetian War of 1694, then the relations between Catholics and Orthodox, are presented Location of science and education.
  • Volume III, part 2, represents the continuation and conclusion of the era of Turkish rule. It deals with the situation of the Orthodox Church in Chios under the Turks and the Chios massacre in 1821-1827. The volume closes with historical and genealogical additions.

family

Zolotas' daughter Aimilia Sarou (Emily Sarrou) brought out the five-volume "Story of Chios" after the death of her father in the years 1921-1928. Another publication, "The Fortress of Chios" ( To kastron tēs Chiou ), published in 1916, was apparently also partly the work of her father.

effect

Zolotas' story of Chios has been highly acclaimed by various reviewers. Compare the book reviews by William Miller and Louis Roussel listed under literature. Among other things, Roussel writes: “L'effort de Zolotas provoque l'admiration. Il a vraiment donné une somme de Chio. "(...)" On ne saurait trop admirer la piété filiale, la science, la persévérance, de Mme Sarou. " (…) “Complétée par un tome sur Chio jusqu'à nos jours, (…), l'Histoire de Chio sera surement la plus belle monographie grecque."
