The vocabulary trainer is a free vocabulary trainer for Windows that is suitable for all languages thanks to the Unicode support. The program has been offered since 2005.
basis
The vocabulary trainer is based on the principle of contextual learning. The vocabulary on a specific topic is summarized and learned by the user in lessons. Contextual learning is based on the assumption that vocabulary that has been grouped together for specific topics can be learned more easily. The vocabulary trainer thus pursues a different learning concept than e.g. B. common flashcard software .
The vocabulary trainer determines the learning success (similar to the learning card software) using different parameters and assigns a score (from 0 to 10) to the lessons accordingly. Lessons that were learned only poorly or only irregularly are suggested and highlighted accordingly by the program ( i.e .: learning principle of repetition ).
functionality
The vocabulary trainer combines its individual functions under a central surface (so-called "StartCenter"). In the current version, the user may receive a. the following functions are available:
- Lessons can be learned using four different methods. With the "standard method" the correct vocabulary or the correct translation (depending on the query direction) must be entered. With the "multiple choice method" the correct answer has to be chosen from five criteria. The “ticker method” plays the vocabulary like in a slide show. “VokabelPairs” enables the playful learning of vocabulary and is based on the well-known memory game principle.
- The user can create and edit his own lessons using the lesson editor. Due to the Unicode coding, a wide variety of languages and characters can be used.
- Ready-made lessons can be downloaded from the marketplace integrated in the program. These are made available by other users free of charge via an upload function integrated in the program. According to the manufacturer, over 27,000 words are currently available on a wide variety of languages and topics.
- The program also offers some other functions for managing your own lessons, such as: B. a backup function, import and export to a wide variety of formats or multi-user support.
Technical details
The first version was implemented with Blitz Basic . From version 2, Visual Basic is used as the programming language. The .NET Framework serves as the software platform . As of version 5.0.9, the lessons are saved as Extensible Markup Language regardless of the platform.
Target group and distribution of the software
Thanks to the intuitive user interface, the program can basically be used from an early age. Dissemination is the vocabulary trainer as such. B. in elementary schools or high schools, but also in institutions for adult education. At the BVS St. Gallen training center , the program takes place u. a. in the course area computer science use.
The online editorial team of the computer magazine PC-Welt counts the vocabulary trainer among the best vocabulary trainers, and the vocabulary trainer is one of the most popular programs in the “Knowledge and Learning” category. The program has also already been described or enclosed in various specialist journals, for example on the DVD of Computer Bild (edition 2011–2025) or in the PC-Welt (edition 8/2011).
According to the manufacturer, the vocabulary trainer is one of the most successful free vocabulary learning programs in the German-speaking world (measured by the number of downloads). The download portal Winload lists the vocabulary trainer in the category “Most rated downloads of all time”.
