Volkan Işık (born September 11, 1967 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish rally driver . The multiple Turkish champion is the only rally driver in his home country to score points in a world championship run.

Career

The first rally of his career was the Ali Sipahi Rally in Turkey in 1989 , in which he immediately finished second. In 1990 Işık competed in a number of rallies as an amateur before joining Renault in 1991 . In 1993 he switched to the Marlboro team , where he drove until 1999. During this time, Volkan Işık became Turkish champion for the first time in 1995 and contested his first international rallies.

In 1998 and 1999 Işık took part in some races of the World Rally Championship. At the 1999 Rally Portugal he finished seventh overall and only just missed out on the points. After three days of racing in the Rally China of the same year, Volkan Işık finished sixth in the overall standings and won a championship point on a Toyota Corolla WRC run by Toyota Mobil Team Turkey . He is the only rally driver in Turkey who managed to do this in a world championship run. Due to a lack of financially strong sponsors, Işık limited himself to assignments in his home country in 2000 and 2001. In 2003 he became Turkish rally champion for the second time.

In 2007 he won the European championship run in Greece and was runner-up in the same season. A year later, in 2008, he finished third in the European Rally Championship. In 2010 Işık, who speaks fluent English and Italian in addition to Turkish, took part in Italian rallies on an older Peugeot 206 WRC with the Turkish Lassa Rally Team . During the current championship he switched to a newer Peugeot 207 S2000, with which he took third place on the podium in two races. Işık finished the season in the Trofeo Rallye Terra, which is part of the Italian championship, with 3rd place overall.

Others

In addition to his commitment as a rally driver, the married Işık also works as an instructor for safety and sports driving courses. He is also involved in the development of Lassa tires for motorsport and, as team leader, also looks after young drivers.
