Volkana is a Brazilian thrash metal band from Brasília that was founded in 1987, disbanded in 1996 and has been active again since 2008.

history

The band was founded in 1987 and at that time consisted of the bassist Mila Menezes, the guitarist Karla Carneiro, the drummer Ana and the singer Eliane. A short time later, the latter two were replaced by the singer Marielle Loyola and the drummer Debora. With this line-up, they moved to São Paulo in 1988 and recorded the 1989 demo Trash Flowers , which consists of two songs. A little later the debut album was recorded. Shortly after the recordings, Debora left the group and was replaced by Sérgio Facci after the drummer Pat briefly held this post. Since the group failed to find a drummer, Facci remained as a permanent member. The album was released self-titled in the USA in 1990 on Moving Target Records , before it was published in Brazil under the name First on Eldorado Records the following year . A cover version of the Ramones song Pet Sematary is featured on the album . After the album was released, Loyola left the group, whereupon Cláudia França took this post, while Selma Moreira joined as the second guitarist. As a quintet Volkana recorded the second album Mindtrips in 1994 , which includes a cover version of Whole Lotta Love . Frank Blackfire contributes a guitar solo on the album . In 1996 the band broke up. 2002 appeared Bootleg - Split -Publishing Descent to Hell / First Scream with Flammea . Volkana has been active again since 2008. The line-up now consists of Menezes, Loyola, Facci and the guitarist Renata Lopes.

style

According to thethrashmetalguide.com , the band plays old-school Thrash Metal, which is mostly "heavy" and at medium speed. The debut album was more serious and closer to classic Thrash Metal, while the second was more influenced by rock music and the grooves of the 1990s. classicthrash.com found that Volkana is one of the few thrash metal bands that is (almost) entirely made up of women. Except for the vocals, the music on the debut album is typical of the genre. The songs are above average with good and "heavy" riffs and a good production that produced an energetic and opulent sound.
