Volker Hess

Volker Hess (born January 9, 1962 in Peiting ) is a German doctor . He is professor for the history of medicine and ethics in medicine at the Charité in Berlin and director of the Institute for the history of medicine and ethics in medicine at the Charité .

Career

Hess studied human medicine and philosophy at the universities of Berlin and Konstanz . In 1992 he received his doctorate with a thesis on medical semiotics . In 1993, Hess became a research assistant at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Free University and completed his habilitation in 1999 in the subject of the history and theory of medicine. In the summer of 2003 he was offered the chair for the history of medicine at the Humboldt University (successor to Prof. Schneck). Volker Hess has been director of the institute since summer 2004.

Scientific work

Hess is the author of numerous original works in magazines and edited volumes as well as the author of several monographs and textbooks. His research interests include the history of medical practices and techniques in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of biological medicines and drug regulation, and the cultural history of psychiatry . Hess dealt with clinical drug research in the GDR or the history of medical records, leprosy slips and vaccination certificates, forensic reports and specialist medical reports.
