He began his professional career at the age of 18 for the Bundesliga season 1973/1974 at Werder Bremen and developed into a regular player in the following season. The young striker made his debut on April 27, 1974 at the home game against Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga. He was substituted on in the 64th minute and scored in the 85th minute to make it 3: 3. Eight days later, his substitution in the 73rd minute in the Werder away game at Eintracht Frankfurt brought the same success: in the 78th minute, Ohling scored the 1-1 equalizer for coach Josef Piontek's team . In 1977 he left the club - he was under coach Hans Tilkowski only came in 1976/77 still nine starts - and moved on to just in the 2. Bundesliga North ascended OSC Bremerhaven . The team of coach Egon Coordes could not keep the class and rose after only a year back to the league and Ohling separated from the team. He paused for two years and then entered the service of VfB Oldenburg , which also played in the second division, for one season. He finished 15th with VfB in the 22nd division in the north and was the top scorer in Oldenburg with 14 goals. Since the single-track 2nd Bundesliga started in the 1981/82 season and Oldenburg was not qualified for it, Volker Ohling's career in the licensed player area ended.
