Create

Wertich is the inventor of the computer game series The Settlers and is responsible for the first (1993) and third (1998) part of the economic simulation . He spent about two years programming the debut title in the series, which he wrote entirely in assembly language for the Amiga . Originally, after Die Siedler II of 1996, it was not planned to create a third part. Due to the great response from the predecessors and the fact that he was not involved in the second part, it finally attracted him to work on The Settlers III , although he was no longer employed by Blue Byte . He left the development studio in 1997 and founded Phenomic Game Development in the same year , where he developed SpellForce (2003) and its successors, a series of real-time strategy games with role-playing elements. In August 2006 the studio was taken over by Electronic Arts and operated under the name EA Phenomic . Wertich continued to work there as managing director. In July 2013 it became known that EA Phenomic had been closed by the parent company. Together with former colleagues, Wertich then founded the independent studio Envision Entertainment, where he himself acts as creative director . The company has 25 employees and works on smaller titles such as the mobile game Path of War . At Gamescom 2018, Ubisoft announced that Wertich is working with Blue Byte on a new The Settlers and is in charge of development.

Volker Wertich lives and works in Ingelheim am Rhein . In 2013 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the presentation of the German Developer Award .
