Volkmar Mair (publisher)

Volkmar Mair (born May 6, 1931 in Innsbruck , Tyrol ) is an Austrian publisher .

Life

After Volkmar Mair, who was born in Innsbruck, completed an internship at Hallwag Verlag in Bern from 1951 to 1953 , he studied business administration , economic geography , newspaper studies , literary history and philosophy in Munich, Hamburg and Paris from 1953 to 1959 . As early as 1957 - in the middle of his doctorate - he took over the publishing house from his father, who suddenly died at the age of 55. The family company based in Stuttgart (from 1972 in Ostfildern-Kemnat ) consisted at that time of Mairs Geographisches Verlag (MGV) and the printing company Mairs Graphische Betrieb (MGB). His dissertation immigration to France from 1918–1957 , with which he was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. received his doctorate, he submitted in 1959.

Under Volkmar Mair's aegis , Mair's Geographischer Verlag developed, combining brands such as “ Karl Baedeker ”, “ Kompass ”, “ADAC-Verlag”, “ Falk ” and “HB” under one roof, as well as producing the extremely successful “ Marco Polo ” series and has been operating under the name MairDumont since 2005 , becoming the European market leader for tourist information. The passion for travel had passed from his father to him, who set out on expeditions to the Balkan Peninsula or North Africa in the 1920s . The father also taught him commercial skills, especially negotiating skills and willingness to cooperate.

Volkmar Mair was CEO for many years . In January 2010 he left the board , but his daughter Stephanie Mair-Huydts (* 1963) joined the management and took over the role of spokeswoman. His son Frank (* 1968) followed later. Volkmar Mair is now Chairman of the Board of Directors of MairDumont.
