Volkmar Wolters

Volkmar Wolters (* 1953 in Bremen ) is a German biologist and professor of animal ecology and special zoology at the University of Giessen .

Research and Teaching

After studying biology, psychology and philosophy at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , Wolters received his doctorate in 1985 with a thesis on the role of invertebrates in the soil in the ecosystems of temperate latitudes. He became professor for environmental sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1995 he went to the University of Giessen. There he is working group leader with a research focus on soil ecology , animal biodiversity, landscape ecology and molecular ecology.

Wolters is President of the Society for Ecology in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (GfÖ) and was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biology & Chemistry. He coordinated several EU projects and participates in the SOILSERVICE program (7th framework program of the EU). He works in the context of the biodiversity exploratories on animal ecology in the cultural landscape and coordinates the BIOLOG Europe project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research .

Television appearances

Wolters writes humorous short poems that deal with elephants in different ways ("elephant poems "). With some of them he appeared in the four episodes of the series Rhyme wins! on ZDFkultur .
