History and architecture

The left, northern part of the two-storey yellow brick building was built in 1895 according to plans by the town building inspector Jansen and served as a public bathing establishment and poor kitchen. The kitchen was housed in a single-storey extension at the rear. The building, which stands on a high red plinth, was then extended by the right half to the south in 1909 by the city building inspector Wilhelm Berner . A book store and a reading room were housed in this part . The book magazine received two false ceilings and was laid out over three floors. In addition, a large window front was added to the rear.

The facade is structured with framing of the window openings and friezes made of red bricks. The entrance is in a flat risalit crowned by a triangular gable in the southern part of the house. The design of the gable is based on the triangular gable that already exists in the older part of the house. Above the entrance, which is partly in the base, there is an ox eye above the door. Some windows in the house are arranged in pairs and spanned by segmental arches.

The Volksbad Buckau is a socio-historical example of an urban hygiene facility that, typical for Magdeburg, was combined with a public library.

In the local register of monuments , the bathing establishment is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 80261 .

When the living conditions of the population changed in the course of the 20th century due to the establishment of bathrooms in the apartments, the building lost its function as a bathing establishment. It was converted into a public cultural facility. Since January 3, 2006 the house has been operated by the Magdeburg women's initiative. In addition to the women's center Courage, other associations such as the association Figur und Topf , the Magdeburg People's Choir , the Choir of the Meridian Association , the Magdeburg Song Friends and the Photography Working Group are located in the house.
