history

The economic situation was difficult for the residents of the region in the founding years of the German Empire. Despite the correction of the Rhine in the middle of the 19th century and the associated decline in the devastating floods, hardship and poverty were great. The changes introduced since the founding of the empire in 1871, such as the abolition of customs duties, the introduction of freedom of trade and the creation of a single currency, led to a flourishing economy. The beneficiary, however, was almost exclusively the emerging, financially strong large industry. The medium-sized and small craft businesses saw themselves forced to invest in order to be able to hold their own against the growing large companies. The population urgently needed capital to be able to invest. The existing big banks, however, required collateral, which was mostly not available.

Following the example of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch , who saw the credit as the key to self-assertion of the craftsmen and farmers, the time had come on December 15, 1897 in Oberhausen : 95 citizens met under Mayor Simon Scheurer and the local pastor Brogle around the Oberhausener Spar - and the loan association to establish a registered cooperative with unlimited liability . According to the founding statute, the aim of the established cooperative was "to raise the economy and acquire members and implement all measures suitable for achieving this purpose, in particular advantageous procurement of economic resources and favorable sales of economic products ".

In 1938 the cooperative succeeded in acquiring and converting the house at Rheinhäuser Strasse 19 (today Kolpingstrasse). The savings and loan fund Oberhausen thus had its first own bank.

On April 14, 1954, the bank was renamed "Spar- und Kreditbank eGmbH". This was in response to the wish of the members to change the status of liability from unlimited to limited liability.
