history

The foundation stone for today's Volksbank Gemen was laid by 63 citizens from Gemen and Gemen parish on March 3, 1895 with the establishment of the “Gemener Savings and Loan Association eGmuH zu Gemen”. In the business year 1895 the association had 95 members. The balance sheet total for 1895 was 11,130 marks.

The first regular ticket office was in the Weck house, Neustraße, then in the Pöpping house on Pelzerstraße; after that, it was moved to the former school (now Tinnefeld), later after taking over from Rendant Rudolf Winkel until January 1961 in his house.

In 1948, the opening balance of what was then the savings and loan association Gemen eGmbH - after the currency reform - was DM 160,297.

In February 1961, the banking business was carried out for the first time in its own building at Neumühlenallee 5. On May 30, 1970, the savings and loan association Gemen eGmbH celebrated its 75th anniversary. Five years later - on August 30, 1975, the name was changed to Volksbank Gemen eG.

On September 3, 1983, Volksbank opened its new bank building at Neumühlenallee 2 in Gemen.

On June 22, 1995, Volksbank Gemen celebrated its 100th anniversary. The guest of honor at the anniversary event was the former Federal Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Hans-Dietrich Genscher .

In 2000, Volksbank Gemen was to merge with what was then Volksbank Borken, now VR-Bank Westmünsterland . At the general assembly on February 17, 2000, the merger was rejected by the members of Volksbank Gemen.

In the 2013 financial year, Volksbank Gemen's total assets exceeded the EUR 100 million mark for the first time.
