history

In 1895 the "First rural savings and loan bank Cöthen" was founded. Business operations began on June 1st at Dessauer Str. 26; soon the move to Springstrasse took place. The cooperative bank looked after private customers, farmers and business people from the city of Köthen, which is developing into an industrial location, and the surrounding villages. Customers initially used the bank to process payment and credit transactions, later they also made use of the option of cashless checks and transfers. In the period that followed, the bank took on other tasks in addition to promoting its members. So she was z. B. used for extensive money exchange campaigns as part of the currency reform of 1948.

After the Second World War, the “First Rural Savings and Loan Fund Cöthen” was converted into other forms of organization. During this time, the management was subject to administrative requirements. It was determined from a central level which customers could keep their accounts with the cooperative and which loans could be granted. The cooperative merged with several surrounding cooperatives over the next few years.

The bank was continued after 1951 under the name " Bäuerliche Handelsgenossenschaft VdgB ". The General Assembly adopted a new statute through central instruction. From then on, the cooperative served less to promote its members and more to meet state goals.

With the German unification, the conditions for the cooperative changed. The purpose of the cooperative was again to promote the members. In 1991 the rural trading cooperative became Volksbank Köthen eG. For economic reasons, Volksbank Köthen eG and Raiffeisenbank Zörbig eG merged a year later . The resulting Volksbank eG; Köthen-Bitterfeld has been active in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district since then.
