Volksblad

Volksblad (until 2001 Die Volksblad ) is an Afrikaans-language South African daily newspaper that appears in the provinces of Free State and North Cape . The Volksblad , published by Naspers , is the country's oldest Afrikaans-language newspaper. The editorial office is in Bloemfontein .

The first edition appeared on November 18, 1904 as a Dutch- language weekly newspaper with the name Het Westen . The publisher was the printer Hendrik de Graaf in Potchefstroom . The newspaper campaigned for the concerns of the Afrikaans in the former Boer Republic of Orange Free State , who had suffered from the Boer War of 1899–1902. In March 1915 the nationalist newspaper was renamed Het Volksblad and in 1916 the main editorial office moved to Bloemfontein. In 1917 the newspaper began publishing its articles in Afrikaans and its name was changed to Die Volksblad . The Volksblad has been a daily newspaper since 1925 .

Since the abolition of apartheid in the 1990s, the newspaper has given up all political connections and tries to attract " colored " readers as well as "blacks". The trilingual subtitle Saam kan ons - Together we can - Hammoho re ka kgona (“Together we can do it”; the third title is in Sesotho , the most widely spoken language in the Free State) is intended to underline this change.

The circulation of Volksblad in March 2006 was around 30,000 copies. Compared to the Afrikaans-language newspapers Die Burger and Beeld , which appear by the same publisher but in different provinces, the sales figures are modest, but their influence is very great in the sparsely populated provinces of the North Cape and Free State.
