The Volkshaus Rotthausen is an event and meeting place in the Rotthausen district of Gelsenkirchen and has been a listed building since 1986 . Originally planned as a “youth house”, it was built in 1920 and 1921 according to plans by the architect Alfred Fischer in the style of brick expressionism . The wrought-iron lights in the entrance area, reconstructed from photos, are particularly beautiful .

The Volkshaus of the Rotthausen mayor's office in the Essen district, which was independent at the time , became a kind of “multi-purpose house” and town hall ; After it was incorporated into Gelsenkirchen in 1924, it experienced an eventful history and was used in a wide variety of ways: It became a cultural and community center, then a youth hostel . During the Nazi era it was used as an SS leadership school ; in World War II it served as a barracks and warehouse for war material. After 1945 it was converted into a DRK station, it was a police station for a time , and later for years the Dahlbusch colliery home for apprentices .

After extensive renovation in 1987 and 1989, it now serves the Rotthauser citizens as a cultural and event location: In addition to concerts and exhibitions, music, theater and carnival clubs as well as sports clubs rehearse here. The Volkshaus is also the seat of the SPD- Ortsverein Rotthausen, the Heimatbund Gelsenkirchen eV as well as the Stadtteilarchiv Rotthausen eV and the Mining Collection Volkshaus Rotthausen. The seat of the table tennis club TTC 1932 Rotthausen is also located here.
