The Volkshochschule Köln ( VHS Köln ) is the second largest adult education center in Germany after the Munich adult education center and the largest adult education institution in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The VHS Cologne was founded in 1919 after the First World War and existed as a liberal educational institution until 1933. Paul Honigsheim was the director from 1920 . During the Nazi era, Hanna Meuter , who was expelled from the university, found a livelihood here. After the turning point in the Nazi era and the Second World War , the VHS resumed its activities in 1946. Since then it has played a central role in the further education of citizens in the areas of politics, society, work, languages, art, culture and health. In 2009 the VHS Cologne celebrated its 90th anniversary.

management

Since 1946, Alfred Nicolai, Heinz Stragholz, Gerd Brosch, Ernst Küchler and Bernd Hambüchen were directors of the Cologne Adult Education Center . In 1985, Gabriele Hammelrath was the first woman to hold this position until she was elected to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia on May 13, 2012 . After Ernst Küchler, who was elected to the Bundestag, she is the second personality to have successfully switched from the Cologne Adult Education Center to politics. On March 8, 2013, the previous department head, Jakob Schüller, was appointed the new head of the Office for Continuing Education and, at the same time, the Cologne Adult Education Center.

structure

The Volkshochschule Köln is a municipal institution of the city of Cologne. The adult education center, together with the projects department, is part of the Office for Further Education. This in turn reports to Department IV (Education, Youth and Sport) of the City of Cologne.

The adult education center in Cologne is divided into six main subject areas:

  • People, society and politics
  • Art, culture, creativity
  • Health, relaxation, exercise, healthy eating
  • Languages: around 30, including German, English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese
  • IT multimedia, from Word to Linux
  • Management, media, qualifications, vocational training

Since 1965, i.e. for 38 years, the VHS Cologne had its own building in the center of Cologne, at Josef-Haubrich-Hof in close proximity to Neumarkt , until it was cleared in 2008 for renovation projects. The VHS should return there in two years. After the historical archive of the City of Cologne collapsed on March 3, 2009, this project was temporarily thwarted by the move of a high school evacuated from the danger zone into the former VHS building. At the moment, the VHS Cologne is temporarily housed in the former music school in Lotharstrasse in Cologne-Sülz and in the Cologne-Nippes district town hall. The office management with part of the administration and several seminar rooms is currently located in building no. 7 in Cologne's Mediapark .

financing

As a state-recognized institution for further education under municipal sponsorship, the adult education center is largely financed by participation fees and budget funds from the city of Cologne and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It also receives grants from third-party funds for projects funded by the Federal Employment Agency , the European Social Fund ( ESF ) and other organizations. According to VHS boss Jakob Schüller, the adult education center in Cologne will receive a grant of 5.5 million euros in 2013.

Memberships

The adult education center in Cologne is a member of the state association of adult education centers in North Rhine-Westphalia and the German Association of Adult Education Centers .
