Voodoo Child (Slight Return) is a blues-rock song by Jimi Hendrix that concludes the1968album Electric Ladyland . Hendrix plays the guitar and sings, Noel Redding plays the bass and Mitch Mitchell the drums. The song is one of Hendrix's best-known, and it caused a buzz during its live performances after recording it in the studio. There are several live recordings that were released on later albums.

After Hendrix 'death in 1970 Track Records released the studio recording as a single in England, on which, however, the title Voodoo Chile was given; Voodoo Chile is another song on the Electric Ladyland album . The single became the only number 1 Hendrix could achieve in the UK . Various musicians have covered the song; Well-known is the 1984 recording by Stevie Ray Vaughan . Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song 102nd on its list of the 500 best songs of all time in 2004 .

Emergence

Voodoo Child (Slight Return) was developed from Voodoo Chile , which was recorded on May 2, 1968 in a studio jam session with Steve Winwood on organ and Jack Casady on bass. The following day, Hendrix returned to the studio with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell to make a short documentary for ABC television . Noel Redding later said, "We learned that song in the studio ... they had cameras pointing at us while we played it ."
