List of breeds of chicken |
The Vorwerk Chicken is a domestic chicken breed that from 1900 in Hamburg was came to its own by the businessman Oskar Vorwerk. In 1912 the breed was first presented to the public at the young poultry show in Hanover. The Vorwerkhuhn is widespread throughout Europe and, in addition to a good laying performance, also offers a good carcass. So it's a dual purpose chicken .
Vorwerkhühner have a strong build in a stocky, rounded country chicken shape . The legs are slate blue and not too strong. The animals have a single comb on their heads.
This breed has no special requirements for keeping and is characterized by a calm and trusting nature.
Dwarf form
The dwarf form of the Vorwerk chicken is also very common. It was recognized in 1965. The rooster weighs 1100 grams and the hen 900 grams. The annual laying capacity is 140 eggs with a yellowish shell. Hatching eggs should weigh at least 37 grams.
Endangerment and breeding
The Vorwerk Chicken is considered endangered livestock breed and stands on the early warning in the list of endangered livestock breeds of the ' Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Livestock Breeds eV' Since 1926 there is a special club , the 'special association for breeding and conservation of Vorwerk and dwarf-Vorwerk hens'. World War II brought the breed to the brink of disappearing. Purebred Vorwerk chickens were only kept by one breeder in the Thuringian Forest with 26 hens and 2 roosters. In 2013 there were 718 roosters and 3141 hens. Since there is a risk of inbreeding with the small total number of specimens, a breeding ring was established for the Vorwerk hen in 1999 .
