Voyage data recorder
The Voyage Data Recorder ( VDR , in German: ship data recorder ) collects data from sensors on board ships . These are digitized, compressed and stored on a data carrier in an externally installed protective capsule that can be recovered. The protective capsule is a tested and approved component that withstands the extreme conditions against shock, impact, pressure and heat that can occur in a ship accident.
The protective capsule can be recovered after a ship accident and the stored data can be called up by authorities or shipping companies to investigate the cause. In Germany, the devices are certified by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
Passenger and cargo ships larger than 3,000 GT and RoRo ferries built after July 1st, 2002 must be equipped with a Voyage Data Recorder System according to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization {IMO-Resolution A.861 (20)}.
Data
The Voyage Data Recorder stores the following data depending on availability:
- Date and Time
- Voice recordings and radio calls from the bridge
- Navigation device data: e.g. B. Images of the radar , ship position and speed, course
- Commands to the rudder , ship's turbine and drive, and their responses
- Wind speed and direction ( anemometer and wind direction transmitter )
- Status of watertight bulkheads and fire doors
- Data from the echo sounder
- Status of the ship's flaps
- (triggered) Main alarms according to IMO
- Main engine and rowing machine status
- Accelerometer (if any)
VDR systems are divided into SVDR (Simplified VDR) and VDR. With the SVDR, all available data, which are defined according to the NMEA standard and available on the bridge, must be connected. Devices without this output do not need to be connected (exception: Speed log and Gyro). Usually for SVDR in NMEA format: GPS , speed log, anemometer, compass, echo sounder, AIS . But also RADAR, VHF and microphones to be installed on the bridge must be connected.
