features

The moths reach a wingspan of 7 to 9 millimeters. Vulcaniella fiordalisa is similar to Vulcaniella grabowiella , but differs in terms of its white head, the larger white drawing elements on the costalader of the forewings. The raised metallic spots are often reduced to a few scales .

In the males, the right brachium is parallel- walled and truncated distally . The left brachium is wide and tapers distally to a blunt apex. The right valvella is slightly shorter than the distal part of the aedeagus . It is slim and curved upwards. The left valvella is triangular. The distal part of the aedeagus is straight and gradually tapers.

In females, the 8th segment narrows distally. The anterior vaginal plate is widened distally in a flat V-shape. The sclerotization at the posterior end of the 7th sternite is sack-shaped.

distribution

Vulcaniella fiordalisa is widespread in the Mediterranean region from Portugal and Morocco to the Balkan Peninsula and Lebanon .

biology

The caterpillars develop on Helichrysum serotinum , Italian straw flower ( Helichrysum angustifolium ), Mediterranean straw flower ( Helichrysum stoechas ) and Phagnalon species and mines in both the young and old leaves. The caterpillars live from April to June in a space mine that is lined with silk on the inside. They pupate in the mine in a very loose web. Butterflies were collected from May to August.
