Systematics

There are two subspecies of the Mediterranean strawflower:

  • Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench subsp. stoechas : The smell of the strongly aromatic plant is reminiscent of curry. The leaves are narrow and linear and usually over 2 inches long. The subspecies occurs in the western Mediterranean in the floristic territories of Morocco, Portugal, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Italy and Sicily, and also as an adventitious plant in Corsica. Information from Sardinia and the former Yugoslavia are based on errors.
  • Helichrysum stoechas subsp. barrelieri (Ten.) Nyman : The plant is hardly or not at all aromatic. The leaves are usually less than 2 inches long and broad, linear to narrow spatulate. This subspecies occurs in the eastern Mediterranean in the floristic territories of Italy, Sicily, Albania, Greece, Crete, East Aegean Islands, European Turkey, Anatolia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.
