The cube-spotted dust weevil ( Liophloeus tessulatus ) is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The squat, strongly arched beetles are 7 to 11 millimeters long. They are covered with light gray, brown, or copper colored scales. The uneven spaces between the elytra are dark spots. The label is a little lighter. The trunk is slightly widened at the front and has three keels converging backwards on the upper side. The anterior and middle femora are provided with small teeth. The brooches at the tips of the tibia are black.

distribution

The species is widespread in Europe. In the north, the occurrence extends to southern Norway, central Sweden and southern Finland. The species is also represented on the British Isles and is sometimes common. In Central Europe it is one of two representatives of the genus alongside Liophloeus lentus .

Way of life

The predominantly nocturnal beetles are usually seen from April to mid-July. The beetle species prefers cooler, moist habitats. They are particularly found on ivy ( hedera ) and coltsfoot , but also on field thistle , meadow chervil and hogweed . The larvae develop on the roots of these plants. It takes two years to develop into a finished beetle. The species usually reproduces parthenogenetically , reproduction can only be bisexual in the mountains.

Taxonomy

The species was named Curculio tessulatus O.F. by Otto Friedrich Müller in 1776. Müller , 1776, scientifically described. In addition to this designation, the following synonyms can be found in the literature :
