Włodzimierz Borowski (born September 7, 1930 in Kurów ; † December 31, 2008 in Warsaw ) was a Polish painter, installation, concept and performance artist and art historian.

Borowski studied art history from 1956 to 1959 at the Catholic University of Lublin . From 1956 he attended lectures by Jacek Woźniakowski on international contemporary art. With friends, he founded the artist group Zamek , which, in addition to artists such as Tytus Dzieduszycki and Jan Ziemski, included young art critics such as Wiesław Borowski , Urszula Czartoryska , Jerzy Ludwiński and Hanna Ptaszkowska and which published the art magazine Strukrury from 1959 to 1961 .

After completing his studies, Borowski went to Warsaw and worked there for the Foksal and Repassage galleries . He began his artistic career as a painter, referring to Karol Hiller's constructivist beginnings , but experimenting in particular with textures. At the invitation of Marian Bogusz , he took part in 1958 with Tytus Dzieduszycki and Jan Ziemski in an exhibition at the Krzywe Koło Gallery with works that resembled reliefs and were compared with works by Antoni Tàpies .

Then he turned to the field of sculpture, installation art, happenings and conceptual art and presented his works at the Pokaz synkretyczny in Warsaw and Lublin, among others . He often used objects that were not intended for use ( Zbiór Trzepakowy , 1967, Zbiory stojakowe , 1968; both Galerie Foksal ) or made the exhibition visitors part of the exhibited works ( Manifest lustrzany (Manilus) , 1965, Fubki Tarb , 1969).

In the early 1970s, Borowski concentrated on art theoretical activities and only worked sporadically for the Labirynt Gallery in Lublin. In 1973 he was awarded the Cyprian Kamil Norwind Prize . In the 1980s, he showed three-dimensional installations with often religious content, especially at exhibitions under the roof of the church. The Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw organized a retrospective of his works in 1996 under the title Ślady .
