WP Schmitz Foundation
The WP Schmitz Foundation is a non-profit German foundation for the promotion of development aid based in Düsseldorf .
history
The foundation was established in 1985 by Werner Peter Schmitz-Hille in Düsseldorf, the seat of the former family company “Walzmaschinen-Fabrik August Schmitz”. He initially brought 100,000 euros into the foundation. During his lifetime, Werner Peter Schmitz-Hille experienced hardship and poverty on many of his trips abroad in the so-called developing countries. This prompted him to contribute significant parts of his private assets to the foundation. As a Swiss citizen, he set up another foundation in 1996, the Schmitz-Hille Foundation, based in Thun, Switzerland . Both foundations support poverty reduction projects around the world.
organization structure
The organs are the board of trustees and an honorary board of directors. The day-to-day business is managed by the full-time managing directors and other permanent employees. The budget volume in 2003 was 1.6 million euros, in 2004 2.3 million euros.
Projects
The foundation supports around 100 projects of various sizes every year. Self-help and needs-oriented small projects are intended to contribute directly to a permanent improvement in the living and income situation of poor and disadvantaged population groups. The focus of activity is in selected countries in Asia, South America and Eastern Europe.
In the more than 20 years of its existence, the foundation has funded around 1,500 projects in 45 partner countries. The foundation's funding priorities are:
- Basic education and vocational training for children and young people
- Agriculture and Food Security
- Employment promotion and small business promotion including small lending
- Rural development and community development
- Health and food security
collaboration
Larger projects are carried out with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development . There is intensive cooperation in many partner countries with the German Development Service and with other German non-governmental organizations. The foundation is a member of the Association for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid of German Non- Governmental Organizations (VENRO). The foundation is a member of the Eastern Europe Foundation Working Group. This includes u. a. also the Robert Bosch Foundation , the Louis Leitz Foundation, the Eberhard Schöck Foundation and the Hanns Seidel Foundation .
