WCMU-FM (“CMU Public Radio”) is a US public radio station based in Mount Pleasant , Michigan . It belongs to Central Michigan University , which is what its callsign refers to. WCMU-FM transmits on 89.5 MHz with 100 kW.
WCMU-FM was originally a 10-watt campus radio station on the typical community radio frequency of 90.1 MHz. The station went on air on April 6, 1964. A wide mix of content was broadcast in the early years, including a. Classic , Pop , and Progressive Rock . In 1969 the station became an affiliate of the National Educational Radio Network from the 1970 National Public Radio (NPR). Since then, WCMU has mainly broadcast classical music and jazz as well as news. WCMU-FM switched to VHF 89.5 MHz in the mid-1970s and transmits there with 100 kW. In 1978, WCMU began building Rebroadcaster in central and northern Michigan. The first was WCML-FM in Alpena .
