The WLE VL 0631-0633 were the diesel locomotive type KHD DG 1600 BBM from the manufacturer Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) from the model range from 1954. There were only three of this series.

The locomotives belonged to a series with different engines and different axle sequences, two machines were still available in 2011.

history

The locomotives were created as a result of the dieselization of the shunting and light line service by the rod locomotives, mainly by MaK in the 1950s. To increase the power of a locomotive, two engines were required because more powerful engines were not yet available. Since a locomotive with bogies has better running properties, three locomotives with two motors were built at KHD in 1957, each working on a bogie.

Two locomotives were sold to the Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn and were supposed to pull heavy freight trains over the Haarstrang there . A push locomotive was only planned for the steepest section. The locomotives proved themselves excellently for this application, with a gradient of 20 ‰ a locomotive could tow a load of 600 t. Then the third locomotive of the series, which had meanwhile been rented to the Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen , was taken over by the WLE. The locomotives were designated as WLE VL 0631-0633 .

The locomotives were in use well into the 1980s. They were primarily used in heavy freight train service, but they could also be seen in passenger train service. The VL 0632 and VL 0633 locomotives were sold to a construction train company in Italy in 1988 and were still available in 2013. The VL 0631 was parked in 1996. A conversion into a two-engine locomotive with three-axle bogies such as the KHD DG 1600 CCM was planned, but was not implemented. The remains of the locomotive were scrapped in Lippstadt in 1996 .

technical description

The locomotives were built after the KHD DG 2000 BBM from 1956 and were the largest front-mounted locomotives with a center driver's cab in Germany at the time. A machine system that drove the respective bogie was housed in each of the two fronts. Depending on your needs, you could drive with two or one engine.

They were equipped with two twelve-cylinder two-stroke diesel engines, their power to a fluid transmission from Voith duties. The diesel engine was located in the front end, the fluid transmission was located near the driver's cab. From there the power was transmitted to the center of the bogie. The two wheel sets were driven via cardan shafts via an intermediate gear.

The VL 0631 is known to have been converted into a single-engine locomotive in 1986. It was replaced by a sixteen-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine with an output of 1100 hp. Instead of the one removed engine, ballast weights were used to achieve an even distribution of weight. In contrast to the original engine, the engine was a fast runner . It was shut down in 2003.
