WORM (Rotterdam)

WORM in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ) is a multimedia center for different types of music , radio plays , film , media art , performance and computer art outside the mainstream, which calls itself the “Institute for avant-garde recreation” (“instituut voor avant-gardist recreatie”). Concerts, film screenings, performances and campaigns, panel discussions, information evenings and workshops take place almost every day. In addition to the public events, WORM includes various do-it-yourself workshops: the CEM electronic music studio, which includes a special and rare collection of analog synthesizers (such as the ARP 2500 and a collection of experimental musical instruments by Yuri Landman ), the Filmwerkplaats - a laboratory and production space for experimental 8 and 16 mm film - the Hacker-Medialab MODDR. All workshops have an artist-in-residence program.

WORM has been located at Boomgaardsstraat 71 in the city center of Rotterdam since summer 2011. The interior was designed by 2012Architecten and Atelier van Lieshout and built from industrial waste. Affiliated are a café, which is open to concert-goers during the concerts, as well as the WORM.shop as a record and book store. The institution is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Culture and the City of Rotterdam.

In 1999 WORM emerged from Dodorama, a stage for improvisation music, and the underground cinema Popifilm. WORM is now the most important Dutch venue for experimental music with 100–150 performances a year. The music spectrum ranges from improvised music , new music , punk and noise to gabber and cumbia . Since 2009 WORM has also been one of the ten nationally funded institutions for digital media culture (“e-cultuur”) in the Netherlands. In the WORM u. a. Lightning Bolt , Melt-Banana , Pierre Bastien , Action Beat , Zach Hill , Silver Apples , Rhys Chatham , Morton Subotnick and Holger Hiller .
