history

Beginnings

The radio station WSB, which was widely audible through its 50,000 watt station and already played an important role in Georgia's country music in the 1920s, began planning a weekly Barn Dance in 1940. The organization of the first show was left to folk and country musician John Lair , who was previously also a member of the WLS National Barn Dance and later was active in the WLW Renfro Valley Barn Dance . The first broadcast took place on November 16, 1940 in the studios of the Baltimore Hotel. The first moderator was Dwight Butcher.

Successes and the end

As early as 1941, the WSB Barn Dance had achieved such popularity that the show was the most successful show in Georgia. More and more viewers came to watch the show live, and on January 14, 1941, the Barn Dance moved to the Atlanta Women's Club , which was then on 14th Avenue. A year later, the show moved again, this time to the not far away Erlanger Theater. Georgia tours were held during the summer months and the concerts were also broadcast on the radio.

The WSB Barn Dance has had successful country musicians as members over the years, for example Hank Penny , Boudleaux Bryant , Mac Wiseman and Bill Carlisle . The show ran for almost ten years in total; In 1950 the program was stopped due to deteriorating ratings. The last WSB Barn Dance was on the evening of February 18, 1950.
