WWJ is a radio station based in Detroit , Michigan. The station is one of the oldest radio stations in the United States and went on the air with the callsign 8MK on August 20, 1920. WWJ broadcasts an all-news program and is now owned by the Entercom media group .
WWJ-TV is the CBS television station for Detroit and grew out of WWJ-AM in the 1950s.
history
As an amateur radio station, the transmitter was licensed on August 20, 1920 to the callsign 8MK . On October 13, 1921, the station was licensed with the callsign WBL. WWJ also broadcast the first concert of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra . The station was owned and directed by CBS Radio from its inception until Entercom took over the CBS radio division in 2017 .
WWJ began broadcasting on the Apex band at 31.6 MHz on January 29, 1936 . The W8XWJ station was licensed for this. The studio and transmitting antenna were on the roof of the Penobscot Building , one of the tallest buildings in Detroit. A two-element butterfly antenna (crossed dipole) was installed there, fed by an RCA- 100-F VHF transmitter.
WWJ is considered the oldest station in Michigan.
Channel
WWJ broadcasts on medium wave 950 kHz from its transmitter near Newport . The studios are located in the Panasonic Building in Southfield .
