Wael Shawky ( Arabic وائل شوقي, DMG Wāʾil Šawqī ; * 1971 in Alexandria ) is an Egyptian video artist .

life and work

Wael Shawky studied Fine Arts at the University of Alexandria and received his Masters from the University of Pennsylvania . In 2010 Shawky founded the MASS Alexandria education center . In 2011 he was awarded the Schering Foundation Art Prize.

“His Telematch series (2007–2009) refers to a German television program from the 1970s in which people from two cities competed in different games, with the added difficulty of having to wear different costumes. The idea of ​​a struggle between two camps, the sole purpose of which is the amusement of a third party, forms the starting point for a series of works that examine complex relationships (between the sexes and religious, political, social and cultural) on different levels. " Telematch Sadat (2007) is a film from the series.

In Cabaret Crusades is the main work Shawkys. The trilogy consists of the films The Horror Show File (2010) , The Path to Cairo (2012) and The Secrets of Karbala (2015) . As a source for the Cabaret Crusades trilogy , he uses the book The Holy War of the Barbarians: The Crusades from the View of the Arabs by Amin Maalouf . In his films, Shawky uses hand-made puppets to make the events of the 11th and 12th centuries visible. The marionettes are made of Murano glass , speak Arabic, wear lavish oriental clothing, embroidered capes, velvet hip corsets or metal armor. The locations of the filmed puppet theater include Damascus , Mosul , Jerusalem and Aleppo .

Wael Shawky's work can be seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Shawky was a participant in the Venice Biennale in 2003 , the Istanbul Biennale in 2011 and dOCUMENTA in 2012 (13) .
