Johann Leuber (born June 21, 1588 in Dresden ; † August 8, 1652 ibid) was the Saxon ambassador to the Westphalian peace negotiations in Münster and Osnabrück.

Life

Origin and family

Johann Leuber was born as the son of Anthonius Leuber (* 1560, pastor and superintendent) and his wife Anna Reichmann (* 1568). In July 1619 he married Catharina Maria Schöner († 1639). Of the nine children in this marriage, only the son Wilhelm (* 1635) and four daughters survived.

Career and work

After visiting the school in Lemgo studied Johann at the Universities of Jena and Wittenberg Law and received his doctorate in 1616 at the University of Basel . He mastered the foreign languages ​​Greek, Latin, French, Italian and Spanish. He had acquired the knowledge on long educational trips. During a six-month employment at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Speyer, he dealt with litigation and court matters. After the appointment as Schwarzburg Hofrat in Sondershausen, a six-year activity followed. In 1623 he became the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I the Government of the county Henneberg appointed. Appointed court and judicial councilor in 1639, he was sent to Nuremberg for the Electoral Congress. From 1640 to 1642 he was on the Reichstag in Regensburg . In addition to Johann Ernst Pistoris , Johann took part in the peace negotiations in Münster and Osnabrück from 1645 onwards as principal envoy from the Electorate of Saxony. On November 24, 1648, he was the last to sign the peace treaties and, after completing the formalities and paying the debts, returned to Dresden on July 2, 1649. At the Danish court he was active in a diplomatic mission from August 1651 to July 1652.

In recognition of his achievements, Leuber received a house from the Elector on Moritzstrasse in Dresden. The tomb of his daughter Eleonore (1621–1646) was in the Frauenkirche until 1945 .
