Live and act

Wagatsuma Sakae graduated from Tōkyō University in 1920 . He then studied civil law under Hatoyama Hideo (1884-1946). In 1922 he got a job at his alma mater and worked there until his departure in 1957 as "Meiyo Kyōju". Wagatsuma's works include the "Lectures on Civil Law" (民法 公 義, Mimpō kōgi), which appeared in seven volumes from 1932 to 1962. They are regarded as the standard work in this area of law. Another work, “The Expressed Precedence of Debt Claim in Current Law” (近代 法 に お け る 債 権 の 優越 的 地位, Kindaihō ni okeru saiken no yuetsu-teki chii), shows Wagatsuma's interest in the relationship between capitalism and private law.

In 1964 Wagatsuma was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in the same year .

Remarks

  1. At the University of Tōkyō, the activity as a professor ends without exception upon reaching the age of 60.
  2. Meiyo Kyōju (名誉 教授) is occasionally rendered in German as "Professor emeritus". But in contrast to this title, which is automatically used on retirement, this is a special award only occasionally granted in Japan.
