Garage with a converted chauffeur's apartment

The Wagenhaus on Uferstrasse is a garage in the East Westphalian city of Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was built in 1908 and is known as the first garage in the city of Minden. The building is under monument protection and is entered in the monument list of the city of Minden .

history

The wagon house on Uferstraße belongs to the city villa on lower Uferstraße. This is where Kommerzienrat Theodor Meyer, owner of a glass factory in today's Porta Westfalica, built his city villa on the right bank of the Weser in the Brückenkopf district . For his public obligations, he was one of the first people in Minden to buy a private automobile that was housed in the car house on the Uferstrasse directly on the banks of the Weser . The garage, a half-timbered building , was built in 1908 and expanded so large that the employed chauffeur could move into a small official apartment above the parking area of the car. In 1925 Ernst Berlin bought the city villa and the car house. He used the location on the Weser to spend the summer in 1945, the villa and car house were confiscated by the British occupying forces and the villa was used as an officers' mess for a long time. The carriage house was unused during this time.

Use as a DLRG boathouse (1966 to 1987)

The car house was used from at least 1966 to September 1, 1987 as the boathouse of the DLRG local group Minden eV. The association's lifeboats were housed here. Due to their location on the banks of the Weser, they could be brought into the water quickly as well as transported via road access. At that time it was nicknamed the "witch's house" and consisted of a garage for the boats and materials and an attic, which was developed at the time, which was used for courses. During this time, the southern extension with a large garage door made of concrete was built. After the end of its use, the DLRG local group Minden moved to a former armed forces dinghy warehouse on the left bank of the Weser, where it is still based today.

Use as a studio

From 1987 the car house was leased by the artist group "Regenbogen" for 20 years. They built a large window on the west gable facing the Weser, which significantly improved the lighting in the house. In 2006 the garage was bought by the Kult-Art association, which continues to use the building as a studio .
