Wageningen is a place and resort in the Republic of Suriname , in the Nickerie district .
Wageningen is located in the northwest of Suriname on the Nickerie , opposite the confluence of the Maratakka. Wageningen is the center of rice cultivation in Suriname. It was the seat of the former state enterprise Stichting Machinale Landbouw (SML), today the private Suriname Rijst Organizatie (SRO) with around 5,000 hectares of cultivation area. The place has 2937 inhabitants (Census 2012) and has a hospital, police station, post office, primary schools, a secondary school, two swimming pools, sports fields, several churches, the Masanga community center , a cultural center as well as a hotel and motel. In Wageningen, a runway was also created with the airport code (AGI), and it has a port for smaller seagoing vessels.
