The Wagoneers were an Austin , Texas- based country band classified as alternative country music .

Career

In the mid-eighties, then twenty-year-old Monte Warden founded the country group Wagoneers with three musician friends . Warden had already made a name for himself with the group Whoa, Trigger in the Austin scene and was also a talented songwriter.

A contract was signed with the A&M label , whose co-owner was the well-known trumpeter and band leader Herb Alpert , and the album Stout And High was released in 1988 . The debut CD was of remarkable quality and originality. Still, it sold poorly outside of Austin. The sound was too modern for the time and too far removed from the mainstream Nashville . Stout And High was largely ignored by country radio stations. In addition, the A&M label was traditionally oriented towards pop music, so that the young country quartet could not be sufficiently promoted.

The situation worsened a year later with the production of the second LP Good Fortune . The record company gave little support. In those days Warden's first son was born with a severe disability. The Wagoneers frontman lost interest in studio work. Good Fortune was accordingly of poor quality. A&M terminated the contract and Monte Warden concentrated on songwriting. The Wagoneers were finished and eventually broke up.
