Lists on the subject

The wahaika (also Patu , wahaika Paraoa ) is a lobe of the Maori .

history

The wahaika was developed by the Maori as a weapon of war. It originated before the colonization by the Europeans .

description

The wahaika has a striking head that is roughly shaped like a blunt hook. The outer edges are thin and sharply ground. Often traditional decorations can be found on the striking face, which are very filigree by the Maori artists. The hook on the bottom is used to parry the enemy's weapons and disarm them. The handle is sanded smooth and also finely carved at the end. At the end, the handle is pierced to accommodate a dog tongue leather sling. This is used to secure the club to the hand. The wahaikas are mostly made of wood, whale bones or jade.
