Election to the National Assembly in Djibouti 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The election for the National Assembly in Djibouti 2013 took place on February 22, 2013 in the north-east African state of Djibouti . The main opposition parties in Djibouti were elected in an electoral coalition called Union pour le Salut National (Union for National Salvation, USN). The previous election to the National Assembly in Djibouti in 2008 had been boycotted by the opposition parties, so that all seats had gone to the ruling coalition Union pour la Majorité Présidentielle (Union for the majority of the President, UMP).

According to official information, the coalition Union pour la Majorité Présidentielle, which has been in power since 2003, won almost 2/3 of the seats to be allocated in the National Assembly in 2013 . The UMP coalition is dominated by the Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progrès party, which has ruled Djibouti since independence in 1977.

The opposition, however, reported that the elections in Djibouti City were fraudulent and published their own censuses, which would result in the number of seats in the ruling party being significantly lower and their own increasing accordingly. Even according to this information, the ruling Union pour la Majorité Présidentielle would have won a majority of the seats.

According to the French broadcaster RFI, at least 40 opposition activists were arrested in the days after the election.
