Presidential election in Djibouti 1981

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1981 presidential elections in Djibouti were sham elections held in Djibouti on June 12, 1981 with no alternative candidates . It was the first ever presidential election in the country, which has been independent since 1977.

The ruling President Hassan Gouled Aptidon of the only legal party Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progrès was the only candidate and was elected with 84.58% of the votes cast. The turnout was 85%. Since Hassan Gouled Aptidon was the only candidate, all ballot papers that did not have his name ticked were counted as "invalid". With that, Aptidon had necessarily received 100% of the valid votes.
