Peter Samulski

Peter Samulski (born December 14, 1938 in Braunsberg ; † January 8, 2012 in Münster ) was a German long-distance runner . He was German, European and world champion as well as world record holder and is considered one of the most successful ultra long distance runners in Germany. Samulski was employed as library director at the University and State Library in Münster .

Life

At the age of 44, Samulski discovered endurance sport for himself in 1982. Samulski completed the first marathon in 1983 in Bremen , where he reached the finish line after 3:08 hours. From 1985 to 1993 he ran for ESV Münster . During this time he started with ultra runs from 1986 . He moved from ESV Münster to Laufsportfreunde Münster , where he also served on the board.

Because of his “relaxed” running style, the 1.74 m tall and 65 kg heavy runner was nicknamed “Calypso”.

He had two sons with his wife Rotraut. Samulski had a close friendship with the runner Roland Winkler .

successes

In 1990 Samulski ran the 261.029 kilometers in the first all-German 24-hour championship in Elze in a 24-hour run , setting a world record that lasted until his death. Over the competition distance of 100 km he was runner-up in the M50–59 age group. His best time in the marathon was 2:38:23 h.

Samulski took part in 350 competitions worldwide, including 105 marathons, around 75 ultramarathons and eleven 100 km runs. He also took part in seven German marathon championships. In addition, he was a participant in seven German 100 km championships, in which he was able to achieve eleventh place twice in the overall classification, once second place and once fourth place in the age group 50. In 1999, he was runner-up in Troisdorf in the age group of 60. He also took part in six 24-hour races, in which he was three times champion of the German Ultramarathon Association in the overall classification in 1989, 1990 and 1992 in Mörlenbach , Elze and Cologne . At the European Championships in Apeldoorn , Samulski reached eighth individual place and was the winner with the German team at the side of Helmut Schieke and Hans-Martin Erdmann . Together with Schieke, Valerie Klement , he became world champion with the German team and also vice world champion in the individual standings.

Awards

Samulski has been honored several times in the election of the City of Münster's Sportsman of the Year .

In the Berlin Sports Museum , Samulski received an exhibition while he was still alive, in which from December 5, 2011 exhibits of his completed runs were shown. For this, Samulski donated a suitcase that contained various trophies, pennants and jerseys from his running career.
