Elections in the Belgian Congo in 1960
General elections in the Belgian Congo were held on May 22, 1960 to create a government for the country's independence, which was scheduled for June 30.
The House of Representatives, with 137 seats, was elected by men over the age of 21. The seats were to be filled from district-based lists, although only two parties, the Parti National du Progrès and the Mouvement National Congolais- Lumumba (MNC-L), submitted lists for more than a quarter.
The MNC-L, headed by Patrice Lumumba , had won the most seats and Lumumba had been elected Prime Minister by the National Assembly after forming a coalition with the Parti Solidaire Africain , the Center de Regroupment Africain and several other parties.
After the election, the Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was elected by members of the district assemblies, and the two chambers then jointly elected the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in this case Joseph Kasavubu of ABAKO .
