The Wahler Berg is an inland dune and hill in the Zons district of the Lower Rhine city of Dormagen in North Rhine-Westphalia. The nine-  hectare area to the east of federal highway 9 is an FFH area with the identification DE-4806-305 part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . The area is also located in the larger nature reserve Wahler Berg, Hannepützheide and Martinsee . The dunes of Dormagen were probably formed after the Würm Ice Age around 13,000 years ago.

Flora and fauna

The natural drifting sand dune of Wahler Berg has a special flora and fauna to offer. Silver grass fields , dwarf shrub heaths , calluna heaths and sandy grasslands grow on the dune between open sand areas . Partial areas are wooded.

Blindworms , sand lizards , rare species of grasshoppers and butterflies , as well as nightingales and other rare animal species live there .

The Wahler Berg must also be cultivated. Sheep graze there regularly to keep the sward short. Without management, as it has been taking place for over 100 years, a forest would gradually emerge on the Wahler Berg area.
