history

The Oberland is the southern part of Liechtenstein and comprises the territory of the former County of Vaduz . The terms Oberland and Unterland apparently only became common in the second half of the 19th century. Forerunners were the terms Upper and Lower Landscape by the early 18th century at the latest . The Oberland has had its own constituency since 1878.

Cultural

Belonging to one of the two parts of the country - as well as to a single municipality - was and is in part still creating identity for the population today. Clearly different dialects are spoken in both parts of the country ( Liechtenstein dialects ). The large number of Unterländer family names in the Oberland municipalities suggests a one-sided direction of migration.
