True Orthodox Church of Romania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The True Orthodox Church of Romania is a small old calendar Orthodox Church in Romania . It is not recognized as canonical by most of the Orthodox churches.

history

In 1924 the Romanian Orthodox Church switched from the old Julian to the New Julian calendar . The Orthodox Old Calendar Church of Romania emerged , as well as other small parishes that rejected this change.

In 1945 these communities became the Cultul Ortodox Pravoslavnic and in 1946 the Cultul Ortodox Traditionalist . Both were banned again in 1950. In 1964, Victor Leu founded the True Orthodox Church of Romania . He made himself archbishop and headed the church, based in Bucharest. He claimed to have been ordained bishop by the metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad in prison in 1948 , but could not produce any written evidence. This is necessary in order to be able to recognize consecration as canonical and to guarantee apostolic succession .

In 2008 the church entered into a communion with the True Orthodox Church of Greece (Matthew Synod), and with the new True Orthodox Churches of Cyprus, Russia and Kenya.

Structures

The True Orthodox Church of Romania has three monasteries, eight priests and about 4,000 believers. Today it is based in Movilica (Vrancea).

It follows the Julian calendar.
