The church was built in 1848 for the rapidly growing missionary congregation in Waihee and the surrounding area, founded by Jonathan S. Green in 1830 . The building was made of lava stone built and has a base of limestone and wood . A wooden bell tower originally towered over the building, but in 1987 the tower was removed due to storm and termite damage .
